• Cal was the oldest of four children, and raised by a single mother in the small town of Witless Bay, Newfoundland. Money was always tight, and Cal's pre-veil memories tend to be tainted by stress and frustration. But at least they're real.
  
  
• Once implanted, he took care of his younger siblings as best as he could. He became a firefighter - although it was of course dangerous, no one worried much about that (or anything), and the pay was excellent.

• While on a call, he was injured. There was no immediate concern, but his implant was damaged. Cal was intercepted on the way to a memory clinic and offered a chance to joint the resistance. He was reluctant to leave his pregnant wife, but as it was framed as the opportunity to save both of them, he took the chance. He did not think he would be gone for five years. And counting.
